Since 1842, Rugg has been the "supplier of choice" for quality lumber, building materials, millwork, paint, tools, kitchens and hardware among area industry professionals and homeowners alike.
It all started when toolmaker Amos Rugg began making "Wood Hay Rakes" in the small town of Montague, Massachusetts. It was there that his son, Francis A. Rugg learned the business. After the first large factory was bought, manufacturing increased but the building was destroyed by fire in 1889. It was immediately rebuilt in Greenfield where it remains operational to this day.
Expansion into the field of lumber was a logical choice for a wood products manufacturer, so a local sawmill was purchased and coverted into a lumber and building materials yard.
Since the market was to be a local, retail one, the subtitle "Rugg Lumber Company" was used to differentiate the new division from the old "rake shop". Not content with just selling "two-by-fours and nails", Clarence Rugg built-up a modern millwork department capable of turning out custom mouldings, sash and doors, and cabinetwork. In the ensuing years, Rugg Lumber became well known throughout western New England for its custom millwork, which was featured in many institutional and commercial buildings, as well as private homes.
In 1961, a modern store and office building was added, completing the picture of a progressive building materials dealer. In the early 1980s, the retail division had expanded into Hampshire County, with with a Hawley Street, Northampton facility. That location suffered a devestating fire, but was rebuilt in the same location, as service the Hampshire county contractors continued to grow. In the early 1990s, Rugg had outgrown the Northampton location and moved to its current location on Rte. 5, West Hatfield...just north of the Northampton town line.
It was at this location that an expansive kitchen design center was housed, with dozens of kitchen's displayed. The numerous expansions of both the manufacturing and the retail business prompted restructuring of the company. Manufacturing became a separate entity and the retail business began a sharp focus on contractor and homeowner needs. It was at this time, the former Rugg Lumber, began doing business as Rugg HomeTown Lumber and Hardware.
In 2005, Rugg HomeTown Lumber and Hardware had grown to a significant, regional product and service provider. In these times of so called "big box" stores moving in to dominate and in may cased drive out locally held companies...Rugg has continued to thrive and expand, due to a marketing plan 100% focused on service to contractors.
It was at this time, the company adjusted its name to better reflect their dedication and focus of serving builders, contractors and project oriented homeowners. The name Rugg Building Solutions was re-branded at all locations in 2006.
Current Rugg president, Michael Fritz, represents the fifth generation of family ownership in the Rugg history. His son, Christopher Fritz, and his son-in-law Christopher Cook, have both joined the company, ensuring that the family legacy will continue into the sixth generation.
While Rugg's past and present are certainly important, the future promises to be an exciting one for the company. The building industry is constantly changing. New materials and new technology regularly emerge, and Rugg Building Solutions will continue to evolve with these changes. As always, Rugg will continue to offer personal service far beyond any chain store.
